Back to school brings a sense of excitement, some nerves, and many questions for teachers and students alike. From students asking, “What do I need to pass this class?” to teachers wondering how to prepare students for an unpredictable future, the biggest questions right now may well revolve around artificial intelligence (AI). I frequently hear concerns from teachers such as, “How do I stop my students from copy-pasting an entire essay from a chatbot?” or “If a machine can do all of the things I’m trying to teach, what am I actually preparing my students to do?”
While one approach is to ban AI and lock it down so students can’t use it, it doesn’t address the fact that nearly 70% of high school students already use AI tools, such as ChatGPT, in their assignments. We can’t prepare students for an AI-saturated world by pretending these tools don’t exist. With access to knowledge and task completion at our fingertips, “knowing more” is no longer enough. Instead, students need to develop the skills that AI cannot replicate: the enduring capabilities that make us uniquely human. The future of work isn’t about robots replacing humans; rather, humans who can collaborate effectively with AI will replace those who cannot.
How do we strike the perfect balance between the two?
One approach we can take is referred to as Vintage Innovation. Coined by educator John Spencer, Vintage Innovation is the idea that the best way to prepare students for the future is to empower them in the present, blending cutting-edge tech with old-school, hands-on tools. It is where Socratic seminars meet student-produced podcasts, and digital modeling sits alongside cardboard, sticky notes, and duct tape. One of the best vehicles to drive Vintage Innovation in the era of AI is Project-Based Learning (PBL).
As an educational consultant who has worked with hundreds of teachers, I want to reassure you: AI does not make PBL obsolete; it makes it essential. PBL brings the joy back to learning by creating equitable, real-world opportunities for every student to show what they know through authentic hands-on work. This is how we balance tech integration with uniquely human capabilities, redesigning our classrooms around the enduring skills our students need to thrive as confident problem solvers.
Reason 1: AI Demands Uniquely Human Critical Thinking
While AI is good at presenting information to us, it can still get facts wrong. Students need critical thinking skills to interpret, analyze, and interrogate what they are presented with, and to decide what to do with that information.
This demand is so urgent that the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)—the global benchmark for evaluating student performance—will introduce “Media and Artificial Intelligence Literacy” as its innovative domain for 2029 to assess whether students can engage critically and responsibly in an AI-mediated world.
We could have AI do much of the heavy lifting in research and problem-solving. However, a landmark study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab demonstrated that while outsourcing tasks to generative AI defers mental effort in the short term, it yields massive long-term costs. Overreliance on AI assistants directly results in diminished critical inquiry and a severe drop in original creativity.
This loss of creativity comes at a terrible time, as companies are desperately searching for proactive problem solvers who can identify issues, design innovative solutions, and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
Even more fundamentally, AI cannot daydream, authentically express itself, or experience human empathy. As Billy J. Stratton highlights in The Washington Post, he shared a powerful example from his classroom in which students prompted ChatGPT to write an original scene featuring three characters from Carson McCullers’ Southern Gothic novel The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. The AI generated a scene in which the character John Singer served as a Socratic hub, speaking fluently to the other characters. The glaring problem? John Singer is deaf. The AI, operating purely on pattern recognition, could not understand the lived, physical reality of deaf characters. AI cannot replace lived human experience, connection, and empathy, which remain critical skills for our students.
How do we teach these enduring, human-centric skills? We don’t develop them by handing students worksheets or reading about them in a textbook. They require active practice, and PBL is the ultimate design framework to make this real.
Reason 2: Durable PBL Skills Are Already Embedded in Your Standards
Many educators hesitate to adopt PBL, viewing it as a luxury “add-on” they cannot afford given the relentless pressure of standardized testing and curriculum coverage. But as PBL expert David Ross demonstrated by feeding English Language Arts (ELA), Math, and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) documents into AI platforms, these durable skills are already deeply embedded in the standards. You aren’t being asked to bolt on extra work; you are being invited to teach existing content through meaningful, real-world application.
Reason 3: PBL Drives Deep Ownership Over Passive AI Reliance
But there is an even deeper reason why PBL is essential in an AI-rich environment.
A comprehensive Stanford review on AI in K-12 education highlights a critical warning: while students using general-purpose AI tools show immediate gains in math and writing practice, this advantage disappears or even reverses on unassisted exams when AI access is removed. General-purpose chatbots often operate outside a student’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), either doing the work for them or providing solutions they cannot explain, leading to “metacognitive laziness”.
A structured PBL cycle is the ultimate antidote to this “crutch” effect. In a recent study published in the International Journal of Learning, Teaching and Educational Research, graduate students tackled complex, applied engineering projects in an environment where generative AI was freely accessible. The researchers required students to formulate a real-world problem, build a fully functional product, write original technical documentation, and publicly defend their technical decisions before a live panel of experts.
The result? Over 68% of the students agreed that the structured PBL requirements made exclusive, passive reliance on AI outputs functionally impossible. Because they had to stand in front of their peers and experts to verbally justify their choices of a specific prompt, code block, or design, they had to take deep personal ownership of the content. PBL turns passive AI users into active, critical evaluators of technology.
From Theory to Action: Actionable “Micro-Shifts” to Teach Enduring Skills Next Week
If the thought of launching a massive, six-week PBL unit makes you sweat, start small. You already know how to teach; these micro-shifts don’t add extra work to your plate, but rather adapt what you are already doing. You don’t need to try all of these at once—simply pick one small step that fits your classroom to try as early as next Tuesday:
Replace Big Projects with Shorter “Learning Missions”
- The Micro-Shift: Instead of a long unit, present student teams with a single, immediate “wicked problem” in your local community or school.
- The AI Balance: Give students a strict 45-minute sprint to research the topic and gather as much information as they can. Then, shut the laptops. Have them spend the rest of the block collaborating face-to-face, debating the AI’s suggestions, and filtering those ideas through their own local context.
Establish the Brainstorming Rule
- The Micro-Shift: Protect the “productive struggle” that breeds original human creativity. Declare a “Laptops Closed” rule for the first 15 minutes of any creative brainstorming task.
- The AI Balance: Have students use physical, tactile tools—such as sticky notes, whiteboard markers, sketchnoting, or cardboard—to do the initial “dreaming and imagining.” Once they have formulated their original, human-centered ideas on paper, they can open their devices and use AI to accelerate, organize, and expand upon their draft.
Use the “Shared Device” Collaborative Routine
- The Micro-Shift: Move away from isolated, one-to-one screen time that silences classroom discourse.
- The AI Balance: Group students in pairs or trios and have them interact with an AI tool on a single, shared device. Assign clear roles: one student acts as the “Prompt Engineer,” one acts as the “Fact-Checker and Editor,” and one acts as the “Project Manager.” This deliberate design choice forces students to talk, negotiate roles, and actively debate the AI’s output face-to-face, cultivating deep social-regulation skills.
Teachers as Irreplaceable Designers: AI as Your Co-Pilot
As a teacher, you know that your workday doesn’t end with the bell. The average teacher works roughly 50 hours a week but spends less than half of that time in direct interaction with students. The rest is consumed by lesson preparation, grading, and paperwork.
Teachers are not, and will never be, replaceable by AI, as noted in the U.S. Department of Education’s landmark report, Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning, which strongly advocates for the concept of “Always Center Educators” (ACE) and for keeping “Humans in the Loop.” Moral reflection, cultural responsiveness, and emotional empathy are uniquely human.
However, we can use AI as an assistant and co-designer. By leaning on AI, you can slash your prep time and make these micro-shifts to save time:
- Unlocking Standards: Use AI to break down standards and curriculum and suggest authentic driving questions and missions for students aligned with your standards.
- Utilizing Planning Accelerators: Use co-designed tools like America Succeeds’ Learning Experience Accelerator (LEA) to easily pair academic standards with durable skills (such as collaboration and communication) and define grade-level success criteria in minutes.
- Anticipating Misconceptions: Feed your draft lesson plan into an AI assistant and ask: “Anticipate where middle school novices will struggle with this concept and suggest three alternative, visual analogies I can use.”
