Winter teaching is survival mode. You’re juggling grading, parent emails, and lesson plans that need to flex around unexpected schedule changes, all while trying to keep students awake after lunch. AI isn’t a magic wand – but it might give you back a little breathing room and a few sparks of curiosity in class.
Student engagement is the heartbeat of learning. AI doesn’t replace it – it amplifies it. Whether we feel confident in using it ourselves, students are already experimenting with AI tools. Our role as educators is to make sure they use those tools with curiosity, confidence, and purpose.
One high school teacher put it this way: “I finally saw how AI could fit into my math class without making it feel artificial.” What matters most is keeping the digital world grounded in human connection. When we do this, we can use AI to open up new ways for students to connect, create, and think critically—all while drawing on the professional knowledge and experience we already have.
AI and Student Engagement: A Classroom Example
Where does AI actually fit into student engagement? Recently, one high school teacher used a combination of several AI tools to create personalized Power Cards for one of her students. The Power Cards featured the students’ favorite movie characters as visual aids to teach and reinforce academic, behavioral, and social skills. The personalized Power Cards served as both a student-centered resource and a way to deepen the relationship between teacher and student. Yes, the teacher could have made these cards without AI. Still, the technology made personalization faster, and that personalization is what made the connection stick.
How AI Supports Student Engagement: The Research
So why did those Power Cards work? Engagement grows when students feel seen, known, and valued. The aiEDU AI Readiness Framework emphasizes that engagement is strongest when learning centers on student agency, relevance, and human connection – the conditions that make students feel their contributions matter.
At the same time, the OECD’s AI Literacy Framework reminds us that AI is most powerful when it reinforces human-centered skills such as collaboration, creativity, and ethical judgment. In practice, this means AI should not replace relationships or curiosity in the classroom, but instead create efficiencies that give teachers more space to focus on feedback, deeper thinking, and authentic connection.
Some of the most immediate benefits show up in everyday teaching moves:
- Saving prep time so you have more energy for personalized interaction.
- Offering new entry points into content (quirky prompts, tailored practice, real-world scenarios).
- Making space to highlight what students bring to the classroom so learners see themselves reflected in the work is essential.
