The SEL Playground is a collection of digital and analog activities that allow students (and educators!) to explore different aspects of SEL, take a moment to check in with themselves, and practice strategies for managing feelings and emotions.

The SEL Playground and CASEL Framework: Elevating Emotional Resilience Beyond Academics

SEL encompasses a range of skills and competencies that enable individuals to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. It goes beyond traditional academic learning and equips students with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of life. The SEL Playground is rooted in the CASEL framework: “A framework creates a foundation for applying evidence-based SEL strategies to your community.” This framework “helps cultivate skills and environments that advance students’ learning and development.” In the SEL Playground experience, teachers and students will explore the five CASEL domains:

3. Responsible Decision-Making
4. Relationship Skills
5. Social Awareness

Enhancing Academic Performance: How SEL Benefits Both Students and Educators

Research has shown that students who receive SEL instruction perform better academically (Yale School of Medicine). According to Dr. Brad Johnson, it isn’t just students who need SEL to meet Maslow’s needs, but also educators. Johnson states that educators need:

When educators understand themselves better, they can better help their students. Through opportunities to practice social skills, empathy, communication, and collaboration in safe spaces, students and educators are better equipped to employ those same skills in difficult situations when they arise. By developing skills such as self-regulation and problem-solving, educators are helping prepare students to focus on their studies and achieve academic success.

Transforming Education with SEL Playground: Strategies and Resources for Educators

Educators can use strategies and resources to incorporate SEL into their classrooms and content. These may include interactive activities, role-playing exercises, and reflective discussions. 1. Host your own SEL Playground: One effective way to incorporate SEL is by hosting your own SEL Playground. You can utilize the available resources, adapting them to suit your classroom needs or creating your own. 
2. Have an SEL Day of Play: Another idea is to dedicate a specific day to SEL in your classroom or school—a day filled with interactive games, role-playing activities, and group discussions focusing on different SEL aspects.
