The weight of the end of summer mingled with the excitement of starting the new school year can feel like a full on workout, mentally and physically. As you start to plan your lessons and set up your classroom, it’s easy to get caught up in a never-ending “To-Do” list. You’re probably thinking that there’s no room for professional learning on that list.
Don’t fret!
Virtual Make & Take learning opportunities are micro PDs that make professional learning easy to fit into your schedule.
Virtual Make & Take
Virtual Make & Take is an asynchronous series of learning experiences where you are introduced to topics through a three step learning process.
The Make
- Video Introduction: Introduction to a topic and explanations by video instruction.
- Slide Deck: Companion slide deck with step-by-step instructions.
- Practice: Opportunity to implement the learning right away in a collaborative environment.
These learning opportunities take place in Google Groups because it allows participants to receive notifications and access collaborative files. Plus, it provides a safe community learning space where questions can be asked, resources can be shared, and relationships can be built.
The Take
The best part? Everything that is created in the workspace is there to be shared with others! Not only are you walking away with something meaningful that you have created or designed yourself, you are also able to “take” the work of others – hence, the “Make & Take” title!
On Demand Learning
Virtual Make & Take learning opportunities will be offered monthly, with the opportunity to go back and revisit previous learning opportunities and resources. This allows teachers to learn on their own time, process and revisit information as needed, and work through design steps without being rushed. By working together in the collaborative environment, teachers will also have access to other examples and contact information to learn from their peers.
When teachers are provided with choices of process, product, and content, their sense of pride and accomplishment can lead their thinking in new directions. In addition to providing teachers with choice and ownership in their learning, the learning structure that Virtual Make & Take provides is that of flexibility. Teaching and student learning goes beyond simply mastering content, it is about preparing students to be successful, contributing members of society – and the same goes for teachers. Belonging to a professional learning community that encourages collaboration and creative innovation provides opportunities for contributing to a community of learners.
